Layers, Layers, Layers

Layers, Layers, Layers

The dreaded wardrobe transition, bridging Winter and Spring. We’re all stuck between sweaty hot flashes on unexpectedly sunny days and getting caught in April showers—instant fashion regrets. But fear not! Layering is here. The art of seamlessly blending your summer and winter wardrobe can seem daunting, but with a few tips and tricks you can refresh your fits and let your clothes blossom this season.

1. Building a base

The first step in any good outfit is establishing a goal. Are you layering for warmth or to add visual interest to your outfit? In our case, temperature has a big role to play. Warmer days are ahead - there is light at the end of the tunnel (I promise) - but in Britain, we still feel a chill throughout the Spring. Establishing a warm, yet breathable base is a good place to start on those frosty mornings.

I recommend investing in a good quality, fine-knit, long-sleeve top (ideally a cashmere blend). This is going to be your base layer on colder days. Picking a neutral colour like black, white or cream will allow for longevity in your wardrobe. You can throw on the long sleeve base underneath a collared shirt, t-shirt or chunky jumper for added warmth. This top can also take you from day to night easily; paired with some jeans and a just-visible lace bralette you’re ready to hit the pub or the club!

2. Skirt school in session

Personally, I find myself shying away from skirts in the colder months. Honestly, who can be bothered? They always ride up and I never know whether to tight or not to tight? Ladies and gentlemen, we have found a solution to the cold legs and unworn skirts of the world…trousers, under your skirts! But not in a 2000s, Ashley Tisdale, Disney channel kind of way (unless that’s your vibe, in which case you’re rocking it).

Trousers layered under skirts have recently made a comeback in a huge way. Whether it’s a mini or maxi, give it a go! I suggest focussing on the silhouette your pieces create, a pleated mini skirt will be a different look compared to an A-line knee length skirt. Opt for colours and patterns that don’t clash at first, and figure out which combinations suit your style and body. Both the cut of the skirt and trouser impact the look. A relaxed dark-wash jean under a mini skirt is one of my favourite options, or opt for a wide leg trouser with a longer midi skirt for a current take on the trend. Or if you get bored of your tops, pair your favourite mini dress over trousers for a completely new look.

3. Double up on outerwear

This transitional time of year can be a nightmare when it comes to outerwear. It’s too warm for a puffer jacket or wool coat, but too cold to go without that final layer. One of the most stylish ways around this can be to layer two pieces of outerwear!

Try out your favourite shorter jacket, I personally love denim or suede, under a long trench or oversized leather jacket. Or for an evening look, pair a fitted leather jacket under your favourite-faux-fur number. Layering coats and jackets allows you to get more wear out of those Spring/Summer jackets gathering dust all winter, it’s also great if you’re bored of recycling your warmest hoodie or jumper in every outfit.

Layering can massively expand your wardrobe, without breaking the bank or even buying anything new. The key to transitional layering is to use what you already have and to experiment with lengths, textures and unexpected choices.
